Shattered Glass by Teresa Toten

Title: Shattered Glass
Author: Teresa Toten
Format: Paperback ARC
My Rating: ★★★ (3.5 Stars)

Synopsis (Provided by GoodReads):

Toni has always had nightmares about fire, and she also has burn scars but no idea how she got them. So when fire destroys the orphanage she has grown up in, she is ready to make her way to Toronto, where she hopes to discover the truth about the mother she believes hurt and then abandoned her. Toronto proves to be both daunting and exciting for Toni, whose charm and innocence attract attention—not always positive—wherever she goes. Buoyed by the music she hears at the folk club where she finds a job, and encouraged by her glamorous landlady, Toni unearths shocking information that contradicts everything she believes and makes her re-evaluate what she feels for all the new people in her life.

My Thoughts:

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the story of a young girl named Toni, who was orphaned at the age of three. The orphanage that she was raised in burns down and she is forced to leave the comfort of what she called home and the “sisters” that she grew to know and love over the years.

Upon reaching the city, she sets her sights on finding out where she came from and what happened to her that caused her to have burn scars on her body. She is constantly haunted by nightmares and memories of what she believes to be her own mother causing her harm.

I found this book to be quite enjoyable. It was fast paced and I grew to love many of the characters, quirks and all. However, I got pretty annoyed with the main character, Toni, quite a lot. I had to keep reminding myself that she had a sheltered life, hence the reason for her naivety. Still, it did bother me how gullible she was and how trusting she was especially when you take into account her past. She believes that her mother tried to kill her, so I would think that she would be a bit more apprehensive toward others.

Despite that fact, I thought that this book was well written and very intriguing. I was unable to guess the outcome, which is always a plus. I absolutely loved the conclusion to this story and found it to very uplifting. Overall, a very enjoyable read.

Broken Promise by Linwood Barclay

TitleBroken Promise
Author: Linwood Barclay
Format: Paperback ARC
My Rating★★★★★

Synopsis (Provided by GoodReads):

From the New York Times bestselling author of No Safe House comes an explosive novel about the disturbing secrets of a quiet small town.…

After his wife’s death and the collapse of his newspaper, David Harwood has no choice but to uproot his nine-year-old son and move back into his childhood home in Promise Falls, New York. David believes his life is in free fall, and he can’t find a way to stop his descent.

Then he comes across a family secret of epic proportions. A year after a devastating miscarriage, David’s cousin Marla has continued to struggle. But when David’s mother asks him to check on her, he’s horrified to discover that she’s been secretly raising a child who is not her own—a baby she claims was a gift from an “angel” left on her porch.

When the baby’s real mother is found murdered, David can’t help wanting to piece together what happened—even if it means proving his own cousin’s guilt. But as he uncovers each piece of evidence, David realizes that Marla’s mysterious child is just the tip of the iceberg.

Other strange things are happening. Animals are found ritually slaughtered. An ominous abandoned Ferris wheel seems to stand as a warning that something dark has infected Promise Falls. And someone has decided that the entire town must pay for the sins of its past…in blood.

My Thoughts:

I received an ARC of this book from the Book Reporter sneak peek giveaway.

This book follows the main character, David and his son, Ethan. David has recently lost his job and his wife has passed away so he is put into a situation where he has to move back home to his parents house in Promise Falls, NY. One morning, David’s mother asks him to take over some food to his cousin, Marla, who has not been doing too well since the loss of her baby. She lost her child due to complications during childbirth. Little did David know that when he showed up at Marla’s home, there would be an infant child in her arms. Marla claims that the baby was brought to her by angel. This book follows the story of how the child ended up with Marla and what happened to the child’s mother.

I thought that this book was absolutely amazing. It was very well plotted out and the characters were well-developed. Speaking of characters, there are A LOT of them so I would suggest paying close attention to what’s going on while you’re reading this book. If you don’t pay attention, you might get lost in the mix of all of the chaos that’s going on in this book.

Linwood Barclay seems to have a tendency to hint at things throughout the book that you may think are significant but you really aren’t sure whether to pay attention to them or not. I love that about his writing style. He always keeps you guessing and when you think you’ve got it figured out, you are very, very wrong. This book was unpredictable and it’s unpredictability made it just that much more enjoyable. Linwood Barclay likes to build this web of characters and then bring them all together at the end of the book, which I find to be very intense and fast-paced. He has a way of telling a story that makes you not want to put the book down.

Linwood Barclay is my all time favorite author, so I will say to anyone that is interested in suspense/thriller novels, give Linwood a chance! His writing will blow you away and leave you completely stunned. I am so excited that this book is going to lead to two other books that take place in the same town of Promise Falls, NY and I cannot wait to get my hands on them!

Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick

leonardpeacock

TitleForgive Me, Leonard Peacock
Author: Matthew Quick
Format: Audiobook
My Rating★★★★ (4.5 Stars)

Synopsis:

Not to his former best friend, whose torments have driven him to consider committing something tragic and horrific.

Nor to his mum who’s moved out and left him to fend for himself. But to his four friends.
A Humphrey-Bogart-obsessed neighbour
A teenage violin virtuoso
A pastor’s daughter
A teacher

Most of the time, Leonard believes he’s weird and sad but these friends have made him think that maybe he’s not.

He wants to thank them, and bid them farewell.

My Thoughts:

So many feels!

This book is about a boy named, you guessed it, Leonard Peacock. He plans to commit an act of murder/suicide. His target: a classmate at his school. Now, I don’t want to give away anything so I won’t go into very much detail about why he has picked this specific target.  I will say, however, that this target is a bully to Leonard and he does absolutely horrible things to him. They do have a history and the book goes into so much more detail about things that have occurred between thees two boys.

This book pulled at my heartstrings. I am fascinated by psychology so this book spoke volumes to me. So many people suffer from depression and other mental illnesses. Their friends and families are not even aware of it most of the time. For example, Leonard’s mom seems to be oblivious to the fact that her son is crying for help. This would also be a good time to point out that I absolutely cannot stand Leonard’s mom. Her character is just someone who is very easy to loathe. Her blatant disregard for her own son is appalling on so many different levels. Her characteristics are a prime example of why teenagers feel like no one understands them. I know that when I was growing up, a lot of times I felt like my parents just didn’t get it, but I was (thankfully) never brushed off as an annoyance like Leonard was by his mother.

I believe that this book could and probably has been really helpful to teenagers struggling with depression and thoughts of suicide. There are, what I would consider to be, “triggers” throughout the book, so please keep that in mind. But the book does offer some examples of exercises that could be done to bring yourself through the pain and struggles of depression.

With that being said, I highly recommend this book. To anyone. Because let’s be honest, even if you aren’t suffering from depression yourself, I can guarantee that someone you know is. And the friends that Leonard did have seemed to pick up on it. If anything, this book will give you a little insight into what to look for when it comes to someone who is suffering from depression and may be planning to commit suicide. Make yourself aware, because that awareness could save a life.

Favorite Quotes:

“People should be nice to you, Leonard. You’re a human being. You should expect people to be nice.”

“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”

“Not letting the world destroy you. That’s a daily battle.”

“So the key is doing something that sets you apart forever in the minds of regular people. Something that matters.”

“Different is good. But different is hard.”

Origin & Opposition – Quotes & Thoughts

I finally finished reading Opposition today and oh my gosh – the feels! I am very pleased with this series as a whole. There were so many twists and turns, but the one thing that stayed pretty consistent was the love between Katy and Daemon *swoon*

I admire their loving relationship so much. So, to commemorate finishing the series, I am going to post my favorite quotes form the fourth book, Origin, and the fifth and final book, Opposition. I hope you all enjoy! Also, if you haven’t read this series yet – please do! If you like alien romance stories, I definitely recommend it. If you love love, you will love this series to pieces.

origin

“I want a years-worth of seconds and minutes with you. I want a decade’s worth of hours, so many that I can’t add them up.”

“Did you think you could stop me? I’ll burn the world down to save her.”

“So I was thinking, there’s eighty-six thousand, four hundred seconds in a day, right? There’s one thousand, four hundred and forty minutes in a day…There’s one hundred and sixty-eight hours in a week. Around eighty-seven hundred and then some hours in a year, and you know what?…I want to spend every second, every minute, every hour with you…I want a year’s worth of seconds and minutes with you. I want a decade’s worth of hours, so many that I can’t add them up.”

“Oh shit. ET just phoned home.”

“I’m Dee Black. I’m the sister of the douchebag known as Daemon.” She smiled brightly. “But you probably already know that.”
“That he’s a douchebag or that he’s your brother?” Archer asked innocently. “The answer is yes to both.”

“Sometimes words were cheap. They could be powerful, but in those rare occasions like now, words meant nothing.”

“Listen to me, Daemon. This isn’t your fault. I wouldn’t change a damn thing. Okay? Yes, things have sucked, but I’d go through it all again if I had to. There are things I would want to change, but not you – never you. I love you. That’s never going to change.”

“Sporks are only used in the most dire situations.”

“His kisses really did have the power to change lives. Not that I’d admit that. His ego was ginormous as it was.”

 opposition

“I broke every rule of my kind to heal you and keep you with me. I married you and burned down an entire city to keep you safe. I’ve killed for you. Did you think I’d forget what you mean to me? That anything in this world – in any world – would be stronger than my love for you?”

“I think trust anyone makes us all a little crazy.”

“Ninety-nine-point-nine percent of the time I am thinking something that would turn the tips of your ears pink.”

“This kind of love was the real deal, stronger than a whole planet full of psycho aliens and an entire government.”

“Wow. I feel like Morgan Freeman should be doing a voice over right now, like, ‘Their weakest link is something already here,”” I said, and when several sets of eyes settled on me with identical looks of confusion, I flushed. “What? It’s from War of the Worlds, and I think it’s totes appropriate for the situation.”

“Love was a gift.”

“You’d get jealous if she hugged a tree,” Archer tossed out.
“Maybe.” Daemon coasted to a stop in a parking space behind the car. “I’m needy like that.”

The glass shattered in Lotho’s hand.
Daemon frowned as shards of glass tinkled to the floor.
“And that is why we can’t have nice things.”

“What are you dong?”
I stopped what had become an impromptu dance. “Sorry. Nervous.”
“Don’t apologize.” He arched a brow. “It was interesting. Kind of reminded me of a flailing Muppet Baby.”

“Jesus. It’s like I’m a muggle to your pure-blood or something.”

“You can’t judge an entire race of beings on what a small percentage of people have done.”

“The most beautiful people, ones whose beauty is only rivaled by what is inside of them, are the ones who are quietly unaware of it.”

“Your inner book nerd will have a book nerd orgasm.”

Pray that I have a speedy recovery.

Happy reading, lovelies!

Up All Night Reading

I just finished reading Origin by Jennifer L. Armentrout and I just can’t even put into words what I’m feeling. I really want to run into my office and grab Opposition and continue binge-reading until I’ve finished this series. But I also don’t want the series to end. Ever feel this way about a book series? You want to know what happens but at the same time you really don’t because you know that will be the end? This isn’t going to be a long post at all. I just wanted to share the fact that it’s 3:30AM and I just finished Origin and my feelings are all out of whack. I can’t wait to re-read this post when I actually wake up later today.

Obsidian, Onyx & Opal Quotes

Since I’m not doing reviews for these books (if you don’t know why, my last blog states the main reason), I decided to do a post with my favorite quotes from the infamous duo, Kat and Daemon. These are quotes/scenes that I marked while reading these amazing books. So let’s get started with BOOK ONE!

untitled

“Beautiful face. Beautiful body. Horrible attitude. It was the holy trinity of hot boys.”

“Why are you such an ass?” The words came out before I could think twice.
“Everyone has to excel at something, right?”
“Well, you’re doing a great job.”

Personal Favorite —> “I’ve always found that the most beautiful people, truly beautiful inside and out, are the ones who are quietly unaware of their effect.” His eyes searched mine intently, and for a moment we stood there toe to toe. “The ones who throw their beauty around, waste what they have? Their beauty is only passing. It’s just a shell hiding nothing but shadows and emptiness.”

“Will you show me what you look like? You don’t sparkle, do you?”

“The day my internet was hooked up was better than having a hot guy check out my butt and ask for my phone number.” This is true on SO many levels.

“If she was mine, I’d cherish every inch of her. And I wanted to. Now.”

“I was always able to lose myself in reading. Books were a necessary escape I always gladly jumped into headfirst.”

On to BOOK TWO!

untitled

“People who didn’t heart books didn’t understand.”

“I grabbed a bookmark off the coffee table and shoved it in the book. Dog-eared pages were Antichrist of book lovers everywhere.”

“I always liked you. From the moment you flipped me off.”

“If there is anything, there is us. You and me. No one else.”

“Oh holy alien babies everywhere!”

“I understood books. I did not understand boys – especially alien boys.”

“Memories, even bittersweet ones, are better than nothing.”

“That kind of love should’ve been able to beat sickness. That kind of love should’ve conquered anything.”

“I’m not going to do anything stupid. And even if what I plan is risky and insane, it’s a well-thought-out level of stupidity.”

Personal Favorite —> “It had insta-love, the bane of my existence. Girl sees boy and falls in love. Immediately. Soul mate, breath stealing, toes curling, love after one conversation. Boy pushes girl away for some paranormal reason or another. Girl still loves boy. Boy finally admits love.”

Lastly, BOOK THREE!

untitled

“I know you’re upset because you worry about me, but I’m not going to be the girl who sits at home and waits for the hero to wipe out the villains.”

“He…he kisses like he’s dying of thirst, and I’m water.”

“This isn’t a book, Kat.”
I yanked on my other boot. “No, really? Crap. I was hoping you skipped to the end and would tell me what happens. I actually love spoilers.”

“Um, no. He’d kill you.”
Blake laughed.
I frowned. “I’m being serious.”
“Oh.”

“Her death and her life was a mystery. I’d known her for six months, but I hadn’t known her at all.”

“You really shouldn’t trust a soul in this game. Not when everyone has something to gain or lose.”

“There is nothing you can say or do that will change that. So grieve what you had to do. Mourn it, but never, ever blame yourself for things that are beyond your control.”

“It sucked – sucked worse than people who pirated books, sucked more than waiting a year for the next book in a beloved series, and sucked more than a brutal cliffhanger ending.”

“He’s like a suicidal Energizer bunny.”

“He was such an asshole, and I loved him.”

“Folding my arms, I refused to back down. Andrew never liked me. Or puppies. Or bacon.”

DONE!

I swear, typing up all of these quotes makes me want to re-read the first three books, even though I JUST read them! I hope you enjoyed reading through some of the brilliantly written dialogue between the characters of the Lux series. If you haven’t read these books, hopefully these quotes will spark your interest. I will probably be doing another one of these when I finish the fourth and fifth book in the series. Ever get that feeling where you just don’t want to finish a series because you’re going to miss the characters so much? Totally what I’m feeling right now.

My Absence – COLLEGE

I apologize for my short absence! Unfortunately college classwork has overtaken my life. I am currently in the process of writing a 10 page research paper amid regularly scheduled weekly work. Have I said how much I love my professors? I just finished a midterm a few days ago as well, so busy doesn’t really begin to describe my current state very well. As soon as I finish writing this paper, I will look and feel just like Squidward:

Homework-GIFS

In the midst of trying to keep up with my studies, I have managed to find SOME reading time. For those of you who are interested in this, I am currently reading Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout and I am about halfway through it. It is the third book in the Lux series. Can we just take a moment to appreciate Daemon? Yes, I think we should. For those of you who don’t know who Daemon is, let me enlighten you! Daemon is an alien & he looks like this…

Moving on…
I finally finished reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban the other day. This is the first time that i have ever read the Harry Potter series and I’m kind of wishing I had read the books before I watched the movies. Regardless of that, the books are still amazing and I have plans to pick up Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire soon!

I do plan to continue with my reviews but I didn’t really see the point of reviewing the Harry Potter book that I read because, let’s face it, I’m probably the last person to read that book. I won’t be doing a written review of Opal either due to the fact that it is the third book in a series. One word, SPOILERS. However, I will probably make a post with my favorite quotes from the first three books as soon as I’ve finished Opal. Devoid of spoilers. YAY!

Spoilers

So, bear with me my friends! More reviews and book related things to come.

…As soon as I finish this blasted paper.

In the mean time, happy reading lovelies!
